Kids, Start Your Engines!

The 2k Kids’ Dash attracts a huge number of kids and their cheering parents to the race. The course is very spectator friendly with the start, lap point and finish all just metres apart. Or, for the younger kids, we encourage parents to run alongside. With such wide roads to run on, every kid will have a chance to really switch on the after-burners. But even if a more sedate trot is your best on the day, you will still get a huge ovation when you cross the line.
Each kid gets a finisher’s medal, a lolly … and an awesome story for show-and-tell at school on Monday!

All kids start together at 10:30am. Parents, if you are running too please start at the back.
The 2km Dash always draws a huge group of kids and even more cheerleaders!
An achievable goal for the kids on a flat, safe course with great wide roads.

Feel the thunder as 100 kids
go dashing mad!

Course Description

The Kids’ Dash is a completely flat, two-lap course on Whakaue St, Hinemaru St and Memorial Drive. Kids will love the excitement of running on these wide boulevards which are closed to traffic. The event starts on the west side of Memorial Drive and turns left immediately into Whakaue St which then turns to the right into Hinemaru St.

Just before the Arawa St junction – and right in front of the Queens Gate entrance to Government Gardens, the kids turn around and head back the way they came. Taking the eastern side of Memorial Drive, they pass the starting arch and continue up to the roundabout at the lake front where a u-turn takes them back to the start line to complete one lap.

The second lap is a repeat of the first lap, except that at the roundabout on the lake front, they will go right around the roundabout and turn into the finish line and an amazing welcome from the packed spectators. We insist all adult competitors come and cheer on the kids just prior to the grand prize giving!

Parents are welcome to accompany their kids throughout the race (there is no entry fee required for parents), however we do ask that you start at the back of the field and do not finish in the top half of all finishers (take it easy Dad – this is the kids chance to shine!).
